Every book on NovelDatabase receives an NDB Rating from 0 to 5 based on five criteria, each scored equally.
1. Writing Quality. Sentence-level craft, voice, and prose. Is the writing itself a pleasure to read, regardless of subject matter?
2. Plot or Content. For fiction, plot construction, pacing, and narrative logic. For non-fiction, the strength and clarity of the central argument or material.
3. Characters or Arguments. For fiction, the depth and credibility of characters. For non-fiction, the rigor and originality of the ideas.
4. Pacing. Whether the book earns its length, never wastes the reader’s time, and maintains momentum appropriate to its form.
5. Re-readability and Lasting Value. Whether the book rewards a second reading, or whether its ideas and images stay with the reader long after the final page.
Each criterion is scored from 0 to 5, then averaged for the final NDB Rating, displayed to one decimal place.
We also assign every book a Verdict (Yes, Maybe, or Skip) that captures our overall recommendation independent of the numerical score. A book can score well on craft and still receive a Maybe if its appeal is narrow, just as a book with technical flaws can earn a Yes if its strengths matter more than its weaknesses.
We do not display Goodreads or Amazon ratings as our own. When we cite them, the source is always labeled.
